Hourglass

Hourglass figure
That's what the world has chosen to see
As perfection
In a woman
In me

Yet I am just a girl
I am no different than any other
Not special
Not beautiful
With nothing interesting to uncover

So I tried
I tried so hard
I hurt
I starved
Until this perfection was reached

Time went by
Sand trickling down glass
The monster came alive
Black as a raven’s feather
Relentless as a weed
It stole into my mind
It bore its evil seed

And the hourglass was turned over
Time started again
Things continued on
I continued searching for perfection

But with a shadow over my eyes
That kept me from seeing
The pain that I wrought
Upon my body
Upon my mind
Upon the people close to me

I only now can avert my eyes
From that wicked hourglass
I have realized my mistake
The question is
Am I too late?
This damage that I've done
Can it be fixed?
Can the cloud lift?
From my eyes
So I will stop
Hurting myself
And those I love

Because I can feel it there
Lurking
Prowling
Waiting to strike
I am weak
It already has control
Of me

I am scared
Of what is beyond
If this beast
Can not
Will not
Leave me alone

Hourglass is what I want
Toothpick is what I got
But it's so hard
To heal the wound
The one that refuses to mend
I am slipping away
My life
My energy
My strength
Like the sand in the hourglass
I'm almost gone

Love, What Is It?

Love
Such a strange, complicated thing
Surprising you every time
The view always changing
There are many different kinds of love
For different kinds of people

The love you have for your family
Is one that comes just out of bond
They share your blood
They sometimes share your trust
You're always close so you know them so well
Eventually you come to love some of the crazy things about them
Although you may hate others
But they're your family
Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers

The love you have for your friends
Is one less serious, but strong all the same
The closer they are, the more you start to share their pains
You're silly together, you're sad together
Eventually you come to understand one another like you shared a brain
Those close friends are the ones that start to become like family
But you're more comfortable with them sometimes
You tell them everything

Then there is the love you have for someone special
Someone you want to see more often
The part of you that you feel is missing
Is filled by them
You want them to always be near
You think they're perfect, despite their flaws
To be by their side forever, your love for them is that strong
They are the ones closest to your heart
But they're the hardest to find

And yet they're all the same in a way
All these different loves
They're a feeling of closeness
But more than that
It's the feeling of butterflies in your stomach
Or of your heart swelling up
Smiling even if you don't want to
Inside jokes that make only the ones that know them laugh

Love is hard to describe
And difficult to duplicate
Sometimes you think you feel it
You want to feel it
But really it isn't there

Sometimes it's not permanent
Love isn't necessarily everlasting
Maybe the feeling isn't shared
And you're forced to push it away
And maybe you lose faith in it ever returning

Those who live without love are the saddest of all
Not necessarily missing a soul mate
More like living without family
Without anyone close to your heart
Constantly lonely
Empty
You need other people
Even if it's just one
Someone out there understands you
You should keep them in your life

I'm not sure where I'm going anymore
With this poem about love
It could go on forever
Books have been written
Movies have been made
Songs have been sung
Art has been created
All to try and describe this feeling
One that comes from not only our brains
But everywhere else too
It's a part of your being
It's a part of you

Disappointment

Disappointment
It makes my heart feels like it's being pulled down
Farther and farther, sinking below ground
My vision is blurred by tear upon tear
Dripping down my face
They feel cold, like my current despair
My body quivers and shakes
I feel like I'm drowning in black ink
Dark and shadow-like, it engulfs me
I can't even think
What's happening?
How?
Why?
I can't seem to figure out anything
Except that I can only cry

Veterans Day

For many this day is simply another one free
Of school and work, you can be lazy
They figure it's just another holiday
A day where they can relax
But really, truly, its much more than that
On this day we remember those who fought
For us, our country and whoever they love
They shed blood and tears protecting us
Of their own free will, driven by pure courage
These people are heroes
They nearly gave up their lives
To serve their country
No matter if they died or survived
These soldiers of the red, white and blue
Their hearts are always strong and true
They should be honored always from day to day
But we made the current one our holiday
To show that we cared
Appreciated what they've done
And that for every soldier that comes home
It is another battle won
So think about this, boys and girls
Think about what they're doing for our world
It's Veterans Day, be proud <3

Flying

Floating
Flying
Above the world

Soaring
Swooping
Through the clouds

My head light
Along with my heart
Higher with every stride
I fly

Weightless
Effortless
I'd like this life

To be this way
All the time

Up
Higher
Ascending
I go

Feet never touching the ground
Eyes closed
Feeling the breeze
Sweep over me

I sleep on a cloud
Let it take my body
To a place where I dream

Of love
Of peace
Of purity
Tranquility

This is what it's like
To be Free

I recently made an account on there and have been posting my other writings, besides just poetry, on it. If you're interested, I would love if you checked it out. And there are also a TON of other great writers on the site, so there's always something to read. So if any of you are interested, look up Mikaela Manzano. Anyway, see ya guys later!

Seasons

Now is a time where things begin to sleep
Where the trees turn to gold and velvet
And much earlier the sky turns pink
The fresh breeze cools us down
From the heat that is no longer found

Ever so slowly, things begin to die
All the beautiful birds must fly
Far away before the cold comes
Before the trees are bare
And ones breath is visible in the air
That time of year makes some want to sing
Of laughter and presents
Of snow and skiing

Others feel the cold
Straight to their bones
They cannot wait for the time
Where things start to grow
Where the sun shines every so often
Making room for rain
It is the time of rebirth
Of flowers blooming
Of birds returning
Along with the warmth
Yet there's still the air
Clean and fresh

That will soon be gone
Replaced with one humid and heavy
With sweltering heat
Where people find comfortable
A difficult state to keep
Yet the sun shines bright
It makes one feel like glowing
Many find it hard
To keep from always smiling

But too soon it seems the cold will come again
The cycle will continue
Until the very end
And some like one better than another
It reflects on their tastes
Their personality
And many others
Times of the year are not something that we control
They are one of the many forces in nature
That we find are truly special
